Don’t let thieves put a dampener on your summer holiday

Suncream, check. Phone charger, check . . .

Whether you’ve booked two weeks on a UK campsite, or two nights in a romantic city retreat, don’t let ticking off your holiday checklist distract you from one of the most essential tasks – ensuring your home is secure while you’re away.

According to independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers it is estimated that in the UK there is a burglary every 40 seconds, whilst research shows that 680,000 households have been burgled while the owners were on holiday.

Many of us are unwittingly making it easier for criminals by advertising the fact that our homes are unoccupied. So, with this in mind, we’ve come up with some advice on how to prepare your home before you leave.

Don’t tweet the burglar

So many of us have the social media bug, but a seemingly innocent holiday snap could spell disaster for your home security. Tech-savvy burglars use platforms like Facebook and Instagram to provide them with a window into your life, including your recent whereabouts and when you’re away on holiday. Try not to advertise your location on social media and wait until you are back home before uploading any holiday snaps. If you really can’t resist, set your channels to private.

Ask neighbours to help out

If you’re away for longer than a few days, it might become obvious that your property is empty. An easy way around this issue is to get a neighbour, friend, or family member to call in from time to time. Having someone close the curtains, put the bin out, or even cut the grass if you’re away for a while will make it look like someone is coming and going.

Secure windows and doors

Before you leave double-check all windows and doors are locked and remove keys from locks, or where intruders can see them. It’s easy to overlook these simple security measures but they play a vital role in keeping your home secure. It’s also worth bearing in mind that additional security products for doors and windows, such as deadbolts and letter plate restrictors, can be fitted for ultimate peace of mind.

Catch them on camera

Outdoor and indoor security cameras are much more affordable than they once were and, thanks to wireless technology, they are easier to install. Modern camera systems also offer the ability to check in while you’re away via your favourite smart device.
