8 Tips to Improve your Home Security
December 5, 2016
With the onset of the dark nights, we’re spending more time than ever in our homes where we feel secure. But just how safe is your home? Check out our top eight tips to improve your home security this winter.
Check your doorways
Whether you’ve just moved in or you’ve been living in your property for years, it is important to check your front door – how secure and strong does it look? Also, ensure the back door is just as secure as this is another opening which is often at times overlooked by homeowners – burglars see this as an easy target.
Change the locks
It is always recommended to change the locks on a house when you first move in due to unknown key history? Some keys might not have been returned and this can fall into wrong hands, granting them easy access to your home. The Police Force recommend using a licensed locksmith from Master Locksmith Associations as they are an independent organisation that inspects locksmith companies in the UK.
Explore your new home
Make note of all potential entry points for burglars (if any) and work towards ensuring such openings are well secured or monitored. The more you know about your environment, the better equipped you are to take preventive measures.
Make sure your garage and shed is secure
Sometimes sheds and garages are left unsecured as people often overlook these areas. However, if bikes, gadgets and gardening tools are stored inside then it is recommended that a solid lock is included to reduce the chances of being broken into.
Alternatively, patterned glass can be used to help protect such storage areas and keep the interior well-hidden.
Keep keys away from the door
Some doors make it easy for burglars to use a long stick to unlock front doors due to the position of the letterbox. Based on such situations, it is always advised to keep keys away from the door to prevent easy access into your home. You can also invest in a letterplate restrictor to prevent thieves from trying to gain access.
Invest in a good quality alarm system
A good quality alarm system can easily discourage a burglar from breaking into a house, especially when no one is available. Make sure the alarm system is setup and correctly armed at all times when you are not home. Modern alarms can easily be monitored via various apps which help keep you informed even when far away.
Make sure you take out insurance
Contents insurance or home insurance offers a little form of comfort and protection should anything go wrong. It is also required when taking out a mortgage. This always come in handy if you ever needs to make a claim.
Always be alert
Lastly, always be alert – do not leave any opportunity for a burglar to break into your house, always lock doors and windows when no one is home and keep keys out of sight.
