Week 2: Safe as Houses

October 10, 2016

Week two of National Home Security Month is focusing on the traditional, mechanical solutions that can keep your home secure!

Burglars are opportunists. They notice areas of weakness such as open windows or poor quality door locks, places to hide in the surrounding area, and garden furniture that can aid a break-in. Don’t get caught out, learn how to keep your home protected for total peace of mind.

Top tips for securing your home:

– When it comes to door locks, ensure external timber doors are secured with a mortice
lock and/or nightlatch that meet British Standard BS3621. If you have a PVCu or composite door, consider upgrading the cylinder to a British Standard, TS007 Kitemarked model.

– The most commonly stolen items in domestic burglaries are electrical devices, jewellery, and cash. Keep these protected in a home safe that is securely bolted to the floor or wall.

– Research finds that 60% of burglaries attempted on homes with alarm systems fail, so it’s not surprising that alarm kits are the most commonly purchased form of security.

– And don’t forget your home’s boundaries! Secure gates with a high security, anti-cut padlock, trim hedges for improved visibility, and use CCTV to monitor your property when you’re away.
